Police: Hempstead Woman Leaves 2 Dogs On Hot Balcony, 1 Dies

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island woman is set to be arraigned Friday on alleged animal torture charges after police said one of her dogs died from heat exposure after being left on a hot balcony.

Louise Hanif, 56, was arrested Monday.

Nassau County police said officers responded to her apartment in Hempstead after getting a complaint about a dog with heat exposure.

The officers gained access to the balcony through the apartment next door and found a shih tzu and a Pomeranian "in full sun exposure with no shade or means of entrance into the apartment," police said.

One of the dogs died at the scene. The other was taken to an animal shelter for treatment.

"It's a raw and horrific thing to do," Gary Rogers with Nassau County SPCA told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall. "It's a painful death that these animals go through. Can you imagine yourself being somewhere and left in the heat to bake and die that way?"

It's unknown how long the dogs were left on the balcony.
