Long Island Social Services Employee Charged With Beating Daughter With Broomstick
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island social services employee accused of abusing her daughter appeared in court Tuesday.
Chriscelle Andrews looked down as prosecutors told a judge the 53-year-old woman used a broomstick to beat her daughter Sunday, leaving the 10-year-old with a fractured arm after the two got into an argument in their Hempstead home, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.
Police said an alert teacher noticed the girl in pain Monday and called the authorities.
But it turns out when Child Protective Services was contacted, Andrews heard the call, her attorney said. That's because the defendant works in Nassau County's Social Services Department helping those in need of medical assistance.
Andrews' attorney said it's all a big misunderstanding and that the girl fell getting off the school bus.
The mother was charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
The judge ordered Andrews to stay away from her daughter.
Andrews' bond was set at $10,000.
