Long Island Couple Dead Of Apparent Murder-Suicide, Baby Found Unharmed

HAMPTON BAYS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Long Island police say a couple is dead after a murder-suicide in their home on Wednesday night.

Southampton police are investigating the death of a man and woman in their 20s. Their baby was also in the house, but was unharmed, CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reported.

Officers were called to 49 Ponquogue Ave. in Hampton Bays just before midnight after a frantic call to 911 by a woman in the house. Inside, they found a man and woman shot.

The woman who called 911 was unharmed, as was the baby, a 1 1/2-year-old girl, in another room.

"I think it's premature to speculate on exactly what happened," Southampton Police Chief Steven Skrynecki said. "There were three people in the home, very possibly three people in close proximity when the gunshots were fired."

Suffolk police say it appears to have been a murder-suicide, but it is unclear who the shooter was. The engaged couple have been identified as Jonathan Fava, 25, and Kelly Lynn Bray, 24.

Southampton police say there was evidence of alcohol at the scene, but there is no history of domestic calls and no orders of protection involving the couple.

Fava, however, does have an arrest history. In 2016, he was picked up for allegedly shooting at houses and animals, and pulling over drivers with a gun.

Police said a long gun, a hand gun, and bow and arrow were found in the house on Wednesday night.

Police are trying to figure out what tragically went wrong.

"There is nothing to indicate that it was a significantly tumultuous relationship," Skrynecki said. "There might have been some bickering. Nothing outstanding, to our knowledge, in terms of their relationship."

Neighbors were left stunned.

"It's very upsetting, very sad," Jeff Kirby said.

Bray worked at a veterinary hospital. Coworkers said in a statement: "The entire staff is shocked and saddened. Our hearts go out to their families and friends."

The baby is now in the care of relatives, police said.
