Hackensack Incident Latest In String Of Bergen County Luring Attempts
HACKENSACK, N.J.(CBSNewYork) -- Police in Hackensack are searching for a suspect who they said tried to lure a boy into his car, the latest in a series of attempted child lurings in Bergen County.
The most recent incident in Hackensack happened Monday morning when police said a man approached a middle school student and asked if the student could help him find a lost dog. When the child refused, the suspect drove off.
The suspect has been described as a white or Hispanic male in his 20s. Police said he was driving a two-door, black Honda.
There have been six other similar incidents in Bergen County in the past eight days. Police said children in Norwood, Ridgefield Park, and Leonia were also targeted.
Last week, police in Leonia said a 13-year-old girl was walking near Fort Lee Road when she was approached by a man driving a four-door, gold-colored Honda.
The suspect rolled down his window and asked the girl to get in the car and show him to the post office, police said. The girl refused and ran away.
That suspect was described as white, in his 50s, with a medium build and grey mustache.
Detectives are also looking into two cases where a man yelled inappropriate sexual comments at girls who ran away. They're now on the hunt for a man in his 50s driving a light blue SUV with New Jersey plates.
On Wednesday in nearby Norwoord, two girls reported a man driving a Jeep Wrangler outside Norwood Public School who motioned them to his car, police said.
In another incident, police said a boy ignored two men who approached him in a car in Ridgefield Park. The child rode his bike home and immediately told his parents.
Authorities said because the descriptions vary, there may be several suspects.
Police said they can't stress enough the importance of giving your kids a plan of action in case they are ever approached.
"Have the conversation so they know what to do and they readily act on it," said Ridgefield Park police Lt. Joe Rella.
