Grand Central Entrance Named For Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A newly-renovated entrance at Grand Central Terminal has been named for former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

A special dedication ceremony was held Monday.

In 1975, Onassis led a movement against a plan to build a 55-story tower on top of the landmarked building. Three year later, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the city's Landmark Law, which was being challenged by developers.

"Mrs. Onassis didn't just save Grand Central, she saved the heart of New York City," said Metropolitan Authority Transportation chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast. "Hundreds of thousands of people pass through this terminal each and every day and it's where the city connects with people, ideas, work and play."

The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Foyer at Park Avenue and East 42nd Street features a plaque honoring her efforts and a digital photo display recounting her life and the 101-year history of the terminal.
