Gov. Cuomo Picks Up Key Endorsements As Primary Looms
ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is picking up key endorsements from editorial boards and labor unions ahead of next week's Democratic primary.
Cuomo was endorsed Tuesday by The New York Daily News, where the editorial board wrote that Cuomo had been a ``superior governor'' and deserves to win his matchup against Fordham University law professor Zephyr Teachout.
Cuomo and his running mate, former Buffalo congresswoman Kathy Hochul, also received the endorsements of The Buffalo News, the Transport Workers Union and 1199 SEIU, a union representing 275,000 health care workers.
Hochul says a report that he might dump her isn't true. She told WCBS 880's Alex Silverman on Tuesday that Cuomo has assured her personally "that there is no conversations, no consideration at all of any scenario than me being his running mate on Sept. 9."
"'Unequivocally' is an understatement," the former congresswoman said during an appearance in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. "It is not going to happen."
Last week, The New York Times endorsed Teachout's running mate, Tim Wu, in the lieutenant governor's race. The paper's editorial board sharply criticized Cuomo but made no endorsement in the governor's race.
the Times chose Wu over Hochul on the grounds that he has "a fresh perspective and a new voice to counter Albany's entrenched players. Ms. Hochul does not, and she has a deeply troubling record on health reform, gun control and environmental deregulation."
Wu, a professor at Columbia Law School, is well-known for inventing and spreading the concept of network neutrality, or net neutrality – the principle that all Internet service providers should treat Internet data equally rather than placing restrictions on its use.
He has written numerous articles on the subject for the New Yorker, and has also written for Slate and the New Republic.
