2 dead after crash on Bloomfield Avenue in Glen Ridge, New Jersey

2 killed, at least 1 injured in crash after police chase in N.J.

GLEN RIDGE, N.J. -- A serious crash is under investigation in New Jersey, with multiple fatalities and injuries.

As CBS2's Natalie Duddridge reports, a mangled car rested against a tree in Bloomfield Avenue Park.

Police say around 5 a.m. Monday it went over an embankment and down a hill, killing two people and injuring at least one. The victims have not yet been identified.

"We said a prayer for people who were in the car," one person said. "I was able to see the car that hit the tree. A horrific scene."

"Oh my. Sincere condolences to tall those who are involved," said Gloria Johnson.

Sources say it all began with some type of armed robbery in Montclair that led to a police pursuit to Glen Ridge, one town over.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office say the car was traveling eastbound on Bloomfield Avenue near Ridgewood Avenue when the driver lost control.

"Cars are always coming down here fast," one person said.

The crash happened across the Glen Ridge train station and an elementary school. A crossing guard Duddridge spoke to says he's always worrying about students' safety.

"That corner right there is pretty dangerous. They're flying. I'm trying to get them back. It's a hotspot, all I can tell you. Really sad that that happened," crossing guard Carl Brown said.

The vehicle was pulled out of the trees and towed. The car has handicap Pennsylvania plates.

The investigation is now in the hands of the attorney general's office.
