Hundreds lose power after train hits overhead wires in New Jersey

ELIZABETH, N.J. -- Power outages were reported Monday after a train hit overhead wires in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Officials said the train hit wires over freight tracks on Division Street at around 1 p.m. and pulled down several poles.

Three cars were hit by wires and poles, but no major injuries were reported.

"Very scared. We were stuck up under there. There was a whole bunch of fire and stuff. We were just stuck up under the bridge," said Louis White, a resident of Elizabeth. "We're OK, but just shooken up."

PSEG initially reported close to 1,700 customers lost power. The utility said it won't have power fully restored until repairs are complete.

The work is expected to be done by 7 a.m. Tuesday.
