Federal Investigators Return To LI Park After Human Remains Found
FREEPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Federal investigators are back in at a park on Long Island Thursday after human remains were found.
Back before dawn, the FBI returned to Cow Meadow Park in Freeport in search of more evidence. With the help of K-9 units, federal investigators discovered human remains in the tall grass and marsh Wednesday morning.
There is still no word on the identity of the victim or if gang violence was involved, but it is a concern for neighbors like Tina Pan, who just moved across the street.
"I moved from Jericho. In Jericho, there is some gang groups there," she told CBS2's Magdalena Doris. "I don't think people can avoid, but people can think positive."
The discovery of remains comes one week after 16-year-old Angel Soler was found murdered in a wooded area in Roosevelt.
As the FBI searches the expansive park in Freeport, local Nassau county investigators have returned to the scene of an MS-13 murder, where a 19-year-old was found murdered back in March. Four suspected gang members have been arrested for their alleged involvement in his death.
Some neighbors feel as though the violence is unavoidable and uncontrollable.
"Gang activity has been here and I don't know what the solution is to get rid of it, but throughout the country, it's there," Freeport resident Janice Smith-Bynum.
The FBI gang task force is continuing their K-9 search and investigation inside Cow Meadow Park, which is now off limits.
Nassau County police say the search through Massapequa Preserve is part of an ongoing investigation which started earlier this year. No word on if detectives are searching for more victims.
