Jets Getting Close With Decker? James Jones Reportedly Jumps On Their Radar
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- While New York Jets fans are debating the merits of Michael Vick and a potential reunion with Darrelle Revis, general manager John Idzik is quietly addressing the team's biggest need.
Free agent wide receiver Eric Decker visited the Jets on Wednesday, and, according to multiple reports, the sides were moving close to a deal. A pair of eagle-eyed tweeters tipped off Decker's under-the-radar trip to Florham Park when the 6-foot-3 wideout was spotted on a Tuesday night flight from Denver to Newark.
Decker had 87 receptions for 1,288 yards and 11 touchdowns playing with Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning in 2013. Decker, who turns 27 this week, is expected to command top dollar as one of the top receivers on the market.
According to a report in the Daily News, the Jets are also hot after veteran James Jones, though a visit has not yet been scheduled.
Jones has 310 receptions and 37 touchdowns in seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Jones, who will turn 30 later this month, had 59 receptions for a career-high 817 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games last season, and had a league-high 14 receiving touchdowns in 2012.
The Jets had a glaring need for a top-flight wide receiver even before the release of Santonio Holmes. Stephen Hill has been a disappointment since being drafted 43rd overall in 2012. David Nelson and Jeremy Kerley are also on the roster, though neither can be considered a game-changing target for quarterback Geno Smith.
The Jets re-signed kicker Nick Folk to a four-year deal but for the most part stood pat when free agency opened Tuesday afternoon.
The team has been said to have some degree of interest in Vick, who could mentor Smith and challenge him for the starting job. The odds of that happening went up a bit Wednesday afternoon when veteran Josh McCown, whom the Jets were also reportedly targeting, signed a two-year deal with Tampa Bay.
A reunion with Revis has also been much-discussed just one year after the Pro Bowl cornerback was traded to the Buccaneers. He'll likely be cut by Tampa Bay on Wednesday.
New York also has a big hole on the offensive line after losing Austin Howard to the Oakland Raiders.
