Former New Jersey Corrections Officer Gets 7 Years For Smuggling Drugs
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A former corrections officer was sentenced Friday for smuggling heroin and marijuana into the New Jersey state facility where he worked.
Bobby Singletary, of Paterson, N.J., was sentenced to seven years in prison, including five years of parole ineligibility, Attorney General John J. Hoffman's office said.
He was also ordered to forfeit his pension and is barred from public employment.
A jury found Singletary conspired with other defendants between August 2007 and October 2010 to smuggle heroin and high-grade marijuana into the facility, where residents paid for drugs by wiring money to co-conspirators on the outside.
"Narcotics have a destabilizing impact inside correction facilities, where the environment can be volatile and dangerous," Hoffman said. "By smuggling drugs to inmates, Singletary betrayed his oath and compromised the safety of his fellow correction officers. He demonstrated that he belongs on the other side of the prison bars."
The 55-year-old worked at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center satellite unit in Kearny, which is a state correction facility for sex offenders.
Singletary was found guilty on Sept. 26 on conspiracy, official misconduct and bribery counts.
Five others in the case previously pleaded guilty.
