First New Synagogue In More Than A Century Opens In Hoboken, N.J.
HOBOKEN , N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A new synagogue has opened in Hoboken, N.J.-- the first one in more than 100 years.
As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, the Chabad Jewish Center finished a new Torah on Sunday.
"Anyone that wants to study about their heritage, come and pray, we have a place for you," Rabbi Moshe Schapiro said.
As NJ.com reported, the Chabad Jewish Center moved to Hoboken in September 2011, but never had a permanent residency until Tuesday.
Rabbi Schapiro said he's seen a lot of development in the area.
"And hence, we are seeing much more people moving in. Amongst them, a lot of Jews are moving in so our job is to reach out to them and say, 'We have a place for you,'" he said.
The synagogue offers religious services like Sabbath services as well as educational classes for children.
