First Lady Michelle Obama In Manhattan For Various Events, Fundraiser
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - First Lady Michelle Obama is visiting Manhattan Thursday.
Mrs. Obama delivered the keynote address at the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) convention at the Hilton Hotel in Midtown.
Obama said the Latino community must use higher education as a tool for empowerment instead of waiting for Congress to fix a "broken" immigration system.
She addressed about 1,500 people at a luncheon to promote her Reach Higher initiative. It encourages young people to seek education after high school.
Her speech comes just days after the president asked for $3.7 billion for spending on immigration.
Jennifer Lopez introduced her at the event. The actress and musician touted her new show, Los Jets, which will premier this month.
Earlier in the day, the first lady also visited a non-profit, Global Kids, Inc., to see educational video games students designed.
Mrs. Obama is rounding out her visit to New York City with a Democratic fundraiser.
