First Alert Weather: Red Alert remains in effect for high temps, evening thunderstorms
Alerts/Advisories: Red Alert is in place through Friday.
Friday afternoon, a line of powerful storms started moving through our area, bringing severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings. Significant hail was reported in New Jersey.
Forecast: It's official! After hitting a high of 93 on Thursday, New York City finally had its first heatwave of the year. A few more record highs were set across the area as well, which were followed by a round of severe thunderstorms that brought damage to parts of the Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey.
The humidity will last through the weekend into Monday. Multiple chances of rain will be in place throughout the period as well. Though no day is a washout, heavy rain is likely at times. Rain totals rain average between 1-3". Both Saturday and Sunday will begin dry, and then afternoon showers and storms will fire up. Some of the storms may be severe. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s.
Tropics Update: Hurricane Lee has rapidly intensified into a dangerous Category 5 storm with winds of 165 mph. It's possible that winds within the storm may even reach 180 mph or greater. The forecast models have been divergent as to where Lee ultimately winds up, but some models bring him dangerously close to the East Coast by late next week, so we need to monitor the situation very closely. In the very least, high surf, dangerous rip currents, and beach erosion will be observed at our local beaches. Tropical Storm Margot has also formed in the eastern Atlantic. Margot poses no threat to land as of now.
