First Alert Weather: Red Alert for snow and sleet during Friday commute

First Alert Forecast: CBS2 2/24 Nightly Weather at 11PM

NEW YORK -- The CBS2 Weather Team issued a Red Alert with snow and sleet that could create a messy Friday morning commute.

A winter storm warning has been issued for Sullivan, Ulster and Dutchess counties from 10 p.m. Thursday to 7 p.m. Friday.

A winter weather advisory has also been issued for New York City and Long Island.

In New York City, alternate side parking will be suspended Friday because of the snow. Payment at parking meters will remain in effect.

The forecast is on track with snow, rain and a mixed bag of sleet and ice moving in overnight.

Northern and western New Jersey might be in the worst of the icy spots for the morning.

Areas north of Putnam County will be the only places that only see snow. Everyone else -- including Orange, Rockland and Westchester counties -- will be into some sort of mix.

The good news is that rain will help stabilize any dangerous travel, but that comes after the tough stuff.

It will be a messy, sloppy start with ponding on the sides of roads and nasty travel. Lowered visibility is always an issue during these events as well.

The event wraps up as plain rain or a mix for many, except those areas well north, and we start to dry out in the afternoon.

There is the potential, however, for a tough evening commute, as well. As the storm exits, the leftovers have a chance to freeze over as temperatures drop again Friday afternoon.
