2 Men Rescued, One Man Missing After Boat Flips Over Off Long Island

BABYLON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A boat flipped over in the Fire Island Inlet offshore from Long Island late Tuesday, and a search was ongoing for one man.

Around 5:55 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard, the NYPD Special Operations Division, and the Suffolk County police Marine Bureau were called to the inlet after the 23-foot fishing boat overturned, police said.

Two men were rescued and were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for observation, police said.

The Coast Guard rescued one person from the capsized boat, and safely transported a second person who was rescued by a Good Samaritan, the Coast Guard said.

The search continued late Tuesday for the third man.

The boater who was missing was described as a 50-year-old man from Babylon, police said. who was last seen wearing a green shirt and jeans, the Coast Guard said.

The men who were rescued were described as a 36-year-old man from Wyandanch and a 30-year-old man from Amityville.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, local boaters told CBS2 the waters were calm Tuesday night. It was unclear late Tuesday how long the men were out on the boat before it overturned.

The boat was towed to Captrees Marina in Babylon, the Coast Guard said.
