Fire Engulfs Part Of Base Of Pulaski Skyway Bridge
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Firefighters are battling a blaze underneath the Pulaski Skyway that is sending smoke billowing into the air.
The fire is located on the base of a bridge support for the span that connects Newark and Jersey City.
Video from the scene shows thick plumes of smoke and flames engulfing wooden supports that provide a buffer around the base.
Several firefighting boats are on the scene.
The Pulaski Skyway is under construction for most of the next two years as the roadway deck is replaced and the span is refurbished.
It's unclear if the fire has anything to do with construction currently underway.
The Department of Transportation says it's possible that sparks created by welding activity may have fallen onto the base and caused the fire.
DOT spokesman Steve Schapiro says there's no structural damage to the bridge support.
