Fire on roof of Financial District building

NEW YORK - A fire broke out on the roof of a building in Manhattan's Financial District Wednesday morning, sending black smoke billowing into the sky.

The FDNY got the call just after 9:20 a.m.

Responders found a fire on the roof of the building Greenwich Street. The fire was contained in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

It was placed under control in less than an hour.

No injuries were reported.

Department of Buildings inspectors said workers on the cooling tower were welding brackets when the insulation behind the wall caught fire. A stop work order was issued, and the contractor was issued violations.

"The fire that started this morning was a small incident that took place in an isolated area on the building's roof and did not cause any injuries. There was no structural damage, and the interior of the building was not impacted. While construction is currently stopped in the affected area, work continues in the building and the construction timeline will move ahead as planned. Safety is a priority for the team, which is also grateful for the work of the FDNY," a spokesperson for 125 Greenwich Street said.
