Field Preps Ramp Up At MetLife Stadium As Super Bowl Matchup Is Set

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - With less than two weeks to go until Super Bowl XLVIII kicks off, things are getting busy for the crews at both MetLife Stadium and Times Square.

As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, now that the matchup is set, one of the first orders of business at the stadium is painting the teams' names in the end zones. The Denver Broncos will take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday, Feb. 2.

"We're going to have some tents coming in to put over those areas that we're working on, that we're doing the artwork on," NFL field director Ed Mangan told Haskell. "So we've got to remove the big tarp, but if we get any substantial snow amounts or whatnot, we'll put the big tarp on,"

Snow is forecast for the Tri-State area Tuesday into Wednesday.

The big tarp acts like a heated bubble to keep the field dry.

Meanwhile, a large swath of Times Square is beginning to take shape for Super Bowl Boulevard. As 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported, scaffolding is being erected for broadcasts, and soon a toboggan run will be in place.

But not everyone is excited about the changes.

"This is where we work every day," said Greg Carroll, who sells tickets in Times Square for Stand Up NY on West 79th Street. "They're taking away that major tourist area for the comedy promoters."

However, Jesse, who was handing out menus for a barbecue joint on West 44th Street, said the restaurant was packed for the playoffs and think business will be great during the Super Bowl festivities.
