FDNY Marine Unit On Display At New York Boat Show
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There's a special display at this year's New York Boat Show that features New York City's bravest.
As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, when you think of the fire department, you probably think trucks, not boats.
But their marine response is critical.
"I've had a commercial airliner in the water, I've had two fires on coal ships, I've had an explosion on a chemical tanker. Multiple people in the water and marina fires," explained Chief of Marine Operations Michael Buckheit.
Buckheit said they not only have a display at the Boat Show, they're also looking.
"We like to be fast, powerful and agile as we like to say," he said. "And we find new equipment and see what works best for us to protect those we have charge to protect."
The fire department has more than 20 vessels.
The 110th New York Boat Show opened at the Javits Center on Wednesday and runs through Sunday
