FDNY, Department of Buildings monitoring unstable building in Brooklyn

Over a dozen people evacuated from 3 Brooklyn buildings due to unstable facade

NEW YORK -- The city evacuated three buildings Sunday night in Brooklyn due to an unstable façade.

More than a dozen people had to be relocated by the Red Cross.

"I'm very cold. I don't feel good. I'm a very sick woman. I'm four hours outside," resident Anette Cory said.

Frustration was boiling Sunday outside three buildings on 13th Avenue near the corner of 42nd Street in Borough Park.

The FDNY says just before noon a call came in for an unstable façade at the three-story buildings and they were evacuated as a precaution.

City records show the complaint was about the building shaking.

The Red Cross says it helped three families with emergency assistance, including 12 adults and four children.

"The fire department told us to get out and that's it," a woman named Katherine said. "That we need to go out of the house because it's dangerous to be there. I'm just scared because we have all our things there."

"We have our birds," a little girl added.

The pet birds were later evacuated.

Engineers from the Department of Buildings were on scene and said there were no injuries.

Full vacate orders and stop work orders were plastered to the entrances of the buildings.

"Nobody give us the answer. We ask where we go. Nobody answer," Cory said.

National Grid, which provides natural gas and electricity for homes and businesses, also had crews on scene, digging into the ground.

"National Grid was on scene to ensure safety and integrity of the gas to the buildings and to shut off and secure gas service. Our work had nothing to do with the instability or integrity of the buildings," National Grid said in a statement.

The Department of Buildings said it is continuing to investigate. Meanwhile, the Red Cross said it will work with the families that are displaced to find longer-term resources.

CBS New York did try to reach the owners of the buildings, but was not successful.
