Farnsworth 'Bitter' And Looking For Payback After Being Released By Mets
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Kyle Farnsworth hopes to get a chance to stick it to the New York Mets.
The reliever was released after Wednesday's game against the New York Yankees, just two days after closing out a Subway Series win.
"I'm very bitter right now," Farnsworth said.
The 38-year-old added he was "angry" and "disappointed" after the Mets cut him loose with a 45-day consent waiver in his contract about to expire that would have guaranteed the remainder of his $1-million deal. The move saved the team around $750,000, according to the Wall Street Journal.
"I don't understand it," Farnsworth said. "Actually, I do understand it. It is what it is. ... Because of the way the contract was."
The Mets cut Farnsworth in spring training, avoiding a $100,000 retention bonus, only to re-sign him. He's 0-3 in 19 appearances with a 3.18 ERA and three saves on the season.
Farnsworth can choose accept an assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas. But don't count on it.
"Hopefully I'll find a team to play against this team," he said.
Farnsworth's outright gives the Mets some flexibility with catcher Travis d'Arnaud on the shelf with concussion-like symptoms.
