FAA: Pilots Have Spotted Drones Twice This Week Near JFK
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday was investigating multiple reports of drones buzzing around John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Commercial aircraft pilots reported they saw unmanned aircraft as they made their final approach to JFK on two different occasions over the past few days.
Just after 8 p.m. Sunday, the pilots of a Delta flight and a Virgin Atlantic flight both reported seeing the drones about 10 miles from Runway 22 left at the airport, flying at altitudes of between 2,000 and 3,000 feet, the FAA said.
And around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, the pilot of a JetBlue plane reported seeing a drone while about two miles away from Runway 31 Right, the FAA said.
The reports did not indicate that the pilots had to avoid the drones, and all landed safely, the FAA said.
Nassau County police said they sent a helicopter into the air to investigate, but found no evidence of drones. Nassau County police are not investigating, and have referred the matter to the FAA.
