Eric Adams Sworn In As New York City's 110th Mayor

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Eric Adams was sworn in as the 110th mayor of New York City just after the ball dropped at midnight on Saturday.

Adams held a picture of his mother and used his family's bible to take the oath of office with other family members by his side in Times Square.

As CBS2's Kevin Rincon reported, Adams takes over a city that is dealing with an ongoing pandemic.

Earlier in the the week, he laid out his COVID plan for the winter, hoping to keep businesses and schools open, while battling the spread of the Omicron variant.

"This pandemic has not only impacted us physically, but emotionally, and I'm going to really encourage people in this city to just find that inner peace, no matter what we're going through. We have been through tragedies before. This is a resilient city and a resilient country and I want to bring that energy," Adams said after taking the oath.

Bill de Blasio, in his final act as mayor, helped drop the ball and danced on stage with his wife Chirlane McCray. But de Blasio wasn't the only one celebrating.

Adams was up well into the morning with friends and family.

"If you can hang out with the boys, you gotta get up with the men. I'll be up early in the morning working for the City of New York," Adams said.

True to his word, the mayor took the subway from Brooklyn to City Hall before his first cabinet meeting.
