Embattled Brian Williams Backs Out Of 'Late Show With David Letterman' Appearance

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- NBC News anchor Brian Williams has canceled his scheduled appearance on the "Late Show with David Letterman."

NBC announced the decision a day after Williams said he would temporarily step away from NBC "Nightly News."

The network is looking into Williams' admission that he falsely reported the helicopter he was riding in was hit by rocket fire in 2003 while covering the Iraq war.

Williams had spread the story of his helicopter being under attack during a previous "Late Show" interview with Letterman.

Williams apologized for the statements earlier this week, and NBC News launched an internal investigation Friday.

NBC News has yet to comment on whether Williams will return to "Nightly News."
