East Flatbush Fire Leaves 1 Dead, 7 Injured
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A fire that ripped through a Brooklyn home killed a woman and left seven others injured Sunday morning, authorities said.
The blaze started just after 3 a.m. in East Flatbush, police said.
More than 100 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire that rose to the top of the three-story home that housed two families at 216 E. 89th St.
A 49-year-old woman, identified by police as Maria Henry, died of smoke inhalation.
"Terrible, terrible, terrible," a woman who lives next door told Dennis.
"For someone to just lose your life like that, you know -- and it's so cold outside at this time of the year. It's terrible."
A 65-year-old survivor also suffered smoke inhalation, but is in stable condition. A firefighter who suffered minor injuries was among those who were hurt.
Investigators told 1010 WINS' Derricke Dennis the blaze started in the basement. The cause is under investigation.
The next-door neighbor said she ran back inside to retrieve a bag out of her home. "When I went to my bedroom to get some clothes, my bedroom was on fire, too, so I ran outside. I left everything, and I ran out."
