New Procedure Reshapes Deformed Ears Of Long Island Newborn Twins

FLORAL PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island mother and father are celebrating a medical milestone.

Suzanne and Michael Faeth, of Floral Park, became alarmed three months ago when they noticed both of their newborn twin sons, Liam and Gavin, had deformed ears.

They were facing surgery, but instead the parents chose the relatively new procedure of ear molding.

The molds are held in place with silicon clips and only need to be worn for several weeks to reshape the ears' cartilage and surrounding skin.

"I thought if we could prevent possible future teasing or the boys being insecure about a physical trait of theirs, it seemed like the best thing to do," said Suzanne Faeth, the twins' mother.

Doctors say the ear molds don't affect a child's hearing and work best when inserted shortly after birth.

The Faeths celebrated the infants' three-month birthday with cake Tuesday.
