NFL Player Gets Failed Drug Test Overturned By Proving He Ate Tainted Meat In Mexico, Report Says

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An NFL player reportedly failed a drug test for eating too much tainted meat in Mexico, but was able to overturn his suspension due to receipts he kept.

According to ESPN, Houston Texans left tackle Duane Brown tested positive for clenbuterol last November shortly after taking a bye week trip to Mexico.

Clenbuterol is an anabolic agent that is banned by the league's Performance-Enhancing Substances policy. The league sent a memo to players this week that eating too much meat in China and Mexico could trigger a failed drug test.

ESPN reported the NFL Players Association was able to prove to the league that Brown's tainted test came from consuming too much meat during his trip. Receipts show that Brown ate about 10 burgers and two steaks in Mexico.

Brown, who was cleared of the failed test in April, faced a 10-game suspension due to testing positive for PEDs in 2010.

The NFL said in the memo that "consuming large quantities of meat while visiting those particular countries may result in a positive test for clenbuterol in violation of the Policy," the league said.

The memo continued, "Players are warned to be aware of this issue when traveling to Mexico and China. Please take caution if you decide to consume meat, and understand that you do so at your own risk."
