Police: Alleged Drunk Driver Attacked Construction Worker Who Helped Teen After Crash
PARAMUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A Newark man was arrested after Paramus Police say he crashed into a vehicle, confronted the driver and then attacked the person who came to her aid.
Alkhabir Tate, 22, was arrested for assault and criminal mischief following that incident that happened at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday night.
Police responded to the crash on Route 4 near the Garden State Plaza and determined that a 2002 Honda Civic driven by a 17-year-old woman had slowed down in traffic caused by an ongoing construction zone, when her vehicle was struck from behind.
The 1995 Honda Accord was being driven by Alkhabir Tate. Tate and the other driver both got out of their vehicles and Tate reportedly became hostile to the woman.
When Tate began to walk away from the accident, a construction worker who was working in the construction zone, intervened to assist the woman.
Police say Tate then assaulted the man by punching him in the head at least three times. The man was later identified as a 56-year-old man from Pomona, N.Y.
Police attempted to subdue Tate who allegedly assaulted an officer and kicked the window out of the patrol car. Officers say they found an open bottle of Fireball whiskey in the front seat of his vehicle, but Tate refused to give a breath sample.
Tate is in the Bergen County Jail under a $25,000 bond.
Tate was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, assault, criminal mischief.
