LISTEN: Surgeon Describes Injury Stephen Curry Suffered

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- So just how bad is Stephen Curry's knee injury?

The Warriors announced Monday that an MRI on Curry's right knee determined he has a Grade 1 sprain of the MCL and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. That means he would miss at least the remainder of Golden State's first-round playoff series against Houston and four games in the second round if the Warriors advance that far.

Dr. Stephen O'Brien, an orthopaedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery, appeared as a guest on Mike Francesa's show Monday to explain the injury.

"A Grade 1 is the mildest injury," he said on WFAN. "I actually looked at the tape earlier today, and I watched him try to work out at halftime. You know, I think they're being careful because it's Steph Curry.

"The biggest problem with an MCL injury, Mike, is side to side movement. So in a (football) lineman with a brace, it's not a big deal. In a basketball player, you're taking away his game. He can only go north, south -- not east, west."

But O'Brien said that based on how Curry was moving in a shoot-around and because the injury was not suffered at high speed -- Curry slipped on a wet spot on the court -- he expects the reigning MVP to be back in action in two weeks.
