DOT Installs Pedestrian Island, Crosswalk At Dangerous LES Intersection
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Crossing Delancey and Pitt streets in the Lower East Side just got safer for pedestrians.
For William Mojica, crossing the intersection with his children was so dangerous he'd avoid it.
"Traffic was coming at all different angles and it was very, very dangerous," he told WCBS 880's Monica Miller.
His complaints to state Sen. Daniel Squadron's office led the Department of Transportation to install a new pedestrian island, crosswalks and stop signs.
Traffic signal times have also been lengthened on all of Delancey, according to DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg.
"This project I think really shows that when the community speaks, DOT, we can get to work, we can make things happen," she said.
