Dog Recovering After Fall From BQE In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A dog that witnesses claim was thrown from the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Brooklyn Tuesday night is expected to survive, thanks in part to several Good Samaritans.

Maria Moss Davidson, the communications director for Veterinary Emergency & Referral Group, told 1010 WINS they dubbed the pit bill mix "Meeker" after the street he landed on.

The incident happened at around 6:25 p.m. in Greenpoint.

Witness Gregory Kost told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria he believes Meeker was thrown from a vehicle on the expressway.

"There's no way this dog jumped out of the vehicle cause he was upside-down and then landed on his paws," Kost said. "So he was definitely thrown out or pushed out. There's no way this dog jumped out of that vehicle."

Davidson said they don't know exactly how the poor pooch landed on Meeker Avenue, but there was a witness report.

"We don't know 100 percent for sure that the dog was thrown off the BQE," she said. "There is a report of a witness seeing the dog flying through the air -- literally -- on to Meeker."

Kost said after the dog landed he appeared scared at first, but Good Samaritans rushed over to help.

"Initially it was a bark, (but) once the gentleman got him over to the sidewalk it was more like a groaning noise," he said. "Once he laid down you could tell her was having trouble breathing."

Kost said Meeker had a laceration and was bleeding from his mouth. He said the dog didn't want to stand up and wouldn't drink water that a Good Samaritan had put out for him.

Meeker was brought to Veterinary Emergency & Referral Group in Cobble Hill by a witness, where he was listed in stable condition, Davidson said.

"Right now he's in Intensive Care being watched very closely 24 hours a day, and the goal is just to get him better and get him adopted out," she said.

Kost told D'Auria he can't understand why anyone would do this to a dog.

"For someone to throw a dog off of this type of height, almost three stories, is ridiculous," he said. "They have no heart."

Davidson said since Meeker is a young dog, there's no reason why he shouldn't make a full recovery.
