Child dies after being attacked by dog in Newark, N.J.
NEWARK, N.J. -- A child was killed by a dog in Newark on Tuesday night, authorities said.
The 18-month-old girl died following an attack inside a home on 2nd Avenue at around 7 p.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
The child was being watched by a teen at the time, law enforcement sources said. She was rushed to University Hospital but succumbed to her serious injuries.
The home has a "Beware of Dog" sign outside of it.
Four dogs were taken from the home by Newark Animal Control and placed in quarantine. It's unclear which dogs were involved in the attack.
The case is being investigated by Newark police and Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
"The pit bull attacked the child"
Authorities have not been able to interview the family because they are so incredibly distraught.
One neighbor called it a horrible tragedy.
"The pit bull attacked the child." resident Kawhon Jahnye said. "There were a lot of police cars. I came out. Police were everywhere. It was awful."
