Man, 74, Found Dead With Gunshot Wound Inside Long Island Home
TOWN OF HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A wealthy Long Island homeowner who live on the same posh street in Dix Hills for three decades was killed with a gunshot wound to the head.
The retired tradesman was found dead in his kitchen.
Armindo Reis, 74, lived alone on the exclusive, tree-lined dead end Penn Drive in Dix Hills, CBS2's Jennifer McLogan reported.
"I'm gonna miss him. He was a really good neighbor. He loved gardening," said neighbor Leon Kweit.
Reis was discovered dead in his Penn Drive home Tuesday evening when the woman he was dating, along with his own son and a neighbor became concerned.
The radio traffic about the incident was captured on Suffolk County Police Broadcastify.
"Male lying in the kitchen. Complainant believe the father is beyond help. Complainant said he saw blood in the garage and basement," the radio operator said.
"I'm getting goosebumps right now thinking about it," one neighbor said.
"Very scary. I came home with my children," said another.
"I'm shocked. That's all I can say," one person said.
Police reassured neighbors this doesn't appear to be random.
"There are no signs that this was a home invasion. We are looking into his background, both personal and financial and business," said Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer of the Suffolk County Homicide Squad.
Neighbors told McLogan they may have spotted a suspicious person leaving Reis's home who apparently had rung the doorbell and was allowed in.
"I gave a description to detectives," one person said. "Walking away down the driveway, black hair, six feet tall."
The victim had recent losses in his life. His wife and a child both passed away. One son remains.
Neighbors are hoping for a quick resolution.
Suffolk detectives are urging any business acquaintances or Dix Hills neighbors who have not yet been interviewed to contact them.
