Detours In Store For Jersey City Drivers Ahead Of Pulaski Skyway Rehab Project

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Weekend detours are in store for drivers in Jersey City ahead of a big construction project on the Pulaski Skyway.

For the next three nights, crews are trying to pave alternate roadways needed when lanes of the skyway close April 12 for a two-year renovation project on the 82-year-old structure.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation says cars will diverted to several nearby roads during the $1 billion makeover, but like the skyway, many of those roads are aging.

In September, concrete crumbled onto the lower portion of Route 139 just outside the Holland Tunnel.

Construction crews have been scrambling to repave. Friday morning, workers tackled the ramp from Tonnelle Circle to the lower level of eastbound Route 139.

Friday night from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday and Saturday from midnight to 8 a.m. Sunday, the eastbound lower level lanes of Route 139 will be shut down. On Monday from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, the westbound lanes will be closed.

Then on April 12, the northbound lanes of the skyway from Newark to Jersey City will be shut down for the 24-month makeover.

The DOT is urging drivers to take alternate routes during the project.

Some options include the New Jersey Turnpike Bay Extension, which is also Interstate 78, where they have created an extra lane. Drivers can also use Truck Route 1 and 9 as well as the turnpike to the Lincoln Tunnel.
