Jeter: Retirement Of Yankees Jersey Is 'Not Something I Ever Thought Of'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Derek Jeter spoke Wednesday about the Yankees' choice to retire his number and install a plaque in Monument Park.
As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, when Jeter's No. 2 jersey is formally retired in May, he will join the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Mickey Mantle.
"Some of the greatest players to ever play this game have put on the Yankee uniform, so to have the opportunity to have your number retired, like I said is not something I ever thought of," Jeter said.
He said the honor is hard to believe.
"You know, my dream was always to play shortstop for the Yankees.," he said. "Everything that came along with it wasn't a part of the dreams."
Kids who are part of Jeter's Turn Two Foundation chanted his name before receiving holiday gifts Wednesday.
