Democrats Cuomo, Gillibrand Re-Elected In New York, Rose Upsets GOP's Donovan
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York was one of the earliest called races in New York State Tuesday night. The Democrat was re-elected to the U.S. Senate after a battle with Republican challenger Chele Farley.
Democrat Andrew Cuomo has reportedly defeated Republican challenger Marc Molinaro on Tuesday to win a third term and an opportunity to create a legacy as one of New York's longest-serving and most-dominant governors.
Cuomo's victory means that Kathy Hochul was elected to a second term as the state's lieutenant governor. In New York, candidates for the job of the state's No. 2 executive run alongside candidates for governor.
NEW YORK HOUSE RACES
Political newcomer and Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has reportedly defeated Republican Anthony Pappas in New York City's 14th District. Her victory Tuesday comes after Ocasio-Cortez scored an unanticipated upset over 10-term U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary in June.
On Staten Island, incumbent Republican Rep. Dan Donovan has been unseated by challenger Max Rose. Democrats have picked up a seat in New York's 11th District in the battle for control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Donovan conceded the race to Rose about an hour after polls closed in New York.
STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL HISTORY
Democrat Letitia James has reportedly defeated Republican lawyer Keith Wofford, to become New York's first black attorney general.
James is in her second term as New York City's public advocate, a post similar to an ombudsman.
GOP HOLDS CONTROL ON LONG ISLAND
Despite Republicans being projected to lose majority control of House overall, Rep. Lee Zeldin has defeated Democratic challenger Perry Gershon in a New York's 1st District - which includes the eastern half of Long Island.
GOP mainstay in the House, Rep. Peter King, was re-elected to a 14th term early Wednesday morning. King defeated Democrat Liuba Grechen Shirley in New York's District 2.
Liuba Grechen Shirley gained national exposure when she won the right to spend federal campaign funds on childcare however, King pulled away several hours after the polls closed.
