Deadline For Filing 9/11 Sick Claims Is Midnight
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tuesday is the deadline for people to file claims with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund created by the Zadroga Act.
People diagnosed with one of 67 specific types of cancer have until midnight to apply, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported. Those who either worked at the World Trade Center or lived in the neighborhood after the 9/11 attacks are eligible.
Attorney Michael Barasch said he thinks the fund is about fairness.
"All these people did wrong was believe the EPA when it said the air is safe," Barasch told Haskell.
Payouts from the fund range from $250,000 to $2 million, Barasch said. Victims are entitled to disability, in which case they would be compensated for lost income, he added.

Even if World Trade Center first responders, construction workers or neighbors don't feel sick now, they should register to preserve their right to file claims, said Mubarak Abdul-Jabbar of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association.
The fund has more than $2.7 billion.
