De Blasios' 2 Kids Take On Unpaid City Internships

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio's son, Dante, and daughter, Chiara, each were set to begin month-long unpaid internships with the City of New York this week.

First Lady Chirlane McCray announced on her #FLONYC blog Thursday that Chiara, 19, and Dante, 16, will both be serving city internships as a way to give back.

"Bill and I didn't just raise our children in New York – we raised our children with New York. Chiara and Dante are city kids through and through, and many of the traits that make them wonderful young adults can be traced back to their fellow New Yorkers – their teachers, coaches, neighbors and friends," McCray wrote.

She wrote that Chiara and Dante have both made an effort to give back – volunteering at food kitchens, serving meals to the hungry, and giving out toys to children.

The internships are an extension of that mission, McCray wrote.

Chiara will be working with the city's Office to Combat Domestic Violence.

"She is passionate about working directly with people and this is a great chance for her to get involved with an important issue at the grassroots level," her mother wrote.

Chiara's duties will focus on the Healthy Relationship Training Academy, and the Outreach Team to assist women in need, McCray wrote.

"Chiara is excited to begin helping others, especially young women, reclaim their lives. And I'm excited that she'll be working with Commissioner Rose Pierre-Louis, who has been a vocal advocate for survivors of domestic violence for more than 25 years," McCray wrote.

Dante will work with Dominic Williams, chief of staff to First Deputy Mayor Anthony Shorris.

"(Dante) will help out with various research projects, compile information, and organize files – typical intern stuff," McCray wrote. "Dom and Dante share a love for philosophy, politics and debate, and I know Dante will make a great addition to the team."

With the internships, the entire de Blasio family is now working for the city, as McCray chairs the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, the New York Daily News pointed out.

"Bill and I are looking forward to a month of spirited conversations about what we can do as a family to help create an even better New York," McCray wrote.
