Suffolk Police: Woman, 57, Strangles Mother, 76
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A woman is under arrest on Long Island, accused of killing her own mother.
The two women lived together in a house in Central Islip.
It happened Tuesday at 8:09 a.m. at their home on Cocoanut Street.
Police say Sharon Easter, 57, called 911 and told the operator she had killed her 76-year-old mother Dorothy Easter.
She was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in First District Court and faces 2nd degree murder charges. If convicted, she could get 25 years to life.
"We have a possible DOA in Central Islip. A female says she killed her mother she hit her and then strangled her," dispatchers said in audio recorded on Broadcastify.
Authorities say Sharon used a vacuum cleaner cord to strangle her mother.
Inside the courtroom, Sharon Easter was wearing a white jumpsuit and remained silent. Outside the courtroom, her family members were overcome by emotions, CBS2's Tara Jakeway reported.
On Cocoanut Street, a man Bryan's father lives right next door to the Easters. Bryan is taking care of his dad while he's sick.
"That's what families are supposed to do. So it's really surprising that that happened," Bryan said.
He called the whole situation surreal.
"It's really sad. These are the kinds of things that happen on TV," he said.
The motive behind the murder is still unknown. Easter has been remanded into custody without bail.
