Revis Says His Body's 'Breaking Down,' But He's Not Thinking Retirement
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Revis Island is eroding -- and even its namesake knows it.
In an interview with Newsday, Darrelle Revis said, "My body's breaking down."
While the Jets cornerback is far from being hands down the best at his position -- a distinction he held for years -- he did say he "can still play" and isn't ready to hang up his cleats.
"I'm not thinking about retirement at this moment," said Revis, 31 "I've just got to continue to take care of my body. Some of the past injuries, they linger. They linger."
The seven-time Pro Bowler was victimized by Cincinnati wide receiver A.J. Green in the season opener and then torched by Buffalo's Marquise Goodwin for an 84-yard touchdown the following week.
Revis, who has yet to intercept a pass this season, also was bothered by a hamstring injury and admitted he started the season "a few" pounds overweight after undergoing offseason wrist surgery.
But he says he's feeling better now, and he has played better in recent weeks, including holding Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald to a season-low 48 yards two weeks ago.
One thing's for sure: The days of Revis shutting down the game's top wideouts in one-on-one matchups are over.
"I don't do that no more," said Revis, whose Jets (2-5) play at Cleveland on Sunday. "But I did that for a number of years. When you play Cover Zero on some of the best receivers in the world, it takes a toll on your body."
