Cyclists Head From Newtown To D.C. In Continued Call For Stronger Gun Legislation
NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- It's a 400 mile journey from Newtown, Conn. to Washington D.C., but that didn't stop cyclists from setting out on the trip in support of gun control.
The gun control advocates hit the road Saturday for the second "Sandy Hook Ride on Washington."
The group is headed to D.C. in an attempt to convince members of Congress that it's time for stronger gun legislation in the United States, 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported.
The Ride on Washington also includes a stop at the National Action Network in Harlem.
"We're gonna keep going until Congress listens to American people," said Newtown mom Sarah Roman.
U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel told Baumgarten the group has his vote.
"No civilized country in the world allows the dangerous weapons like we do," Rangel said.
The group is calling for better background checks and an end to loopholes in the law that make it possible for people who ought not to have guns to get them.
They say they're not against responsible gun ownership, but that even responsible gun owners don't need weapons with large ammunition clips, Baumgarten reported.
Twenty students and six educators were killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. on Dec. 14, 2012.
