Cuomo Signs Legislation Strengthening Disability Protections
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is marking the 25th anniversary of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
Cuomo signed two pieces of legislation Sunday that strengthen state protections for people with disabilities. He also signed a proclamation recognizing the anniversary of the federal act.
One piece of legislation deals with barriers to access at places of public accommodation, like hotels and restaurants. It amends what's included as a place of public accommodation, and that it's discriminatory for an operator of such a place to refuse to remove barriers that keep disabled people from accessing it.
The other law directs the state Office for People with Developmental Disabilities to look at laws applying to military family members, and make suggestions for any improvements that would help families of people with developmental disabilities.
