Cuomo, Astorino Make Final Push Before Election Day
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican challenger Rob Astorino are making their final push before Election Day.
Cuomo spoke to hundreds of union health care workers, carpenters and hotel employees at a rally Monday in Times Square. He predicted labor will vote in droves.
A host of former and current elected officials seized on an upstate Republican assemblyman's recent comments that city voters were too lazy to vote.
"They say we're lazy, you show them the biggest vote in history by getting out your vote, and your family's vote and your neighbor's vote," Cuomo said. "We're taking this state forward together."
U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel said New York City residents will vote "like our life depends on it.''
Meanwhile, Astorino has stops in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island on Monday.
He trails Cuomo by double digits in most polls. But some observers have said he could lose by 15 to 20 points and still have a moral victory.
Earlier Monday, Astorino said in an interview his campaign was not a "dry run'' for another race.
"I'm ready to be governor on Jan. 1,'' Astorino said. He said the race is "slipping away'' from Cuomo as the 1994 election did from his father, Gov. Mario Cuomo.
On Sunday, Cuomo was campaigning in West Haverstraw with Rep. Nita Lowey while Astorino made an appearance at a Baptist church in New Rochelle.
Tuesday's election also features hotly contested congressional contests and races for attorney general and comptroller.
Among the state's 27 U.S. House seats, incumbents are facing strong challenges from Long Island to central New York and there are hard-fought contests for open seats on Long Island and in northern New York.
