Suspect Hurt In Police-Involved Shooting In Crown Heights

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One person was wounded in a police-involved shooting in Brooklyn on Wednesday.

The shooting happend around 12:30 p.m. on Montgomery Street in Crown Heights.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Carlos Gomez said it all started when a police officer on Empire Boulevard saw a white Mustang go speeding by.

The officer followed the Mustang with his lights and sirens on along Empire Boulevard to Brooklyn Avenue, where the driver crashed into a truck, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

"I hear the smash and I hear the policeman saying 'stop, stop'" witness Abraham Lavin told CBS2's Alice Gainer.

Gomez said the suspect then got out and ran with a gun in his hand. The officer gave chase.

"They tell him to stop right there, but he didn't. He ran with the gun in his hands," said Lavin.

At Montgomery Street, Gomez said the suspect fell and dropped the gun on the ground.

"He loses his footing, he falls to the floor, and he loses possession of the firearm," said Gomez.

The officer warned the suspect not to pick up the gun, but Gomez said when the suspect reached for it, the officer fired his weapon and shot him once, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

"Twenty-two-year-old male, 15 priors including several arrests for gun possession and manslaughter," Gomez said.

Chaya Gottlleb caught the arrest on her cellphone.

"It's a nice neighborhood, it's full of Jews and it's nice; nice people, quiet. So for an incident like this, it's pretty scary. It alarms the whole community," said Gottlleb.

Police said a gun was recovered at the scene.

Police said the wounded suspect was taken to Kings County Hospital and is expected to survive.

As for the driver of the truck that the suspect crashed into, he was inside a hardware store making a delivery at the time, Gainer reported.

Gomez said the officer used good tactics to subdue the suspect and did everything by the book.
