1 Killed, 2 Wounded In Crown Heights Drive-By Shooting
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A drive-by shooting left one man dead and two others wounded Brooklyn.
It happened around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night on Saint Marks Avenue near New York Avenue in Crown Heights, about six blocks away from Monday's West Indian Day parade route.
Police said the shots came from a black sedan, 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.
Akaijah Evelyn, 37, was shot in the chest and later died at the hospital.
A 31-year-old man was shot in the thigh and a 36-year-old man was shot in the foot. Both are in stable condition at Kings County Hospital.
It's not clear if there was more than one shooter.
No arrests have been made.
Community activist Tony Herbert said this is another example of gun violence that happens too frequently in the area.
"I understand the police department is acting and bringing a number of resources to the area and I'm hoping that will be successful enough for us to be able to stave off these incidences, but there's some serious concerns by the residents in the neighborhood," Herbert said.
The shooting comes days before the J'ouvert festival and West Indian Day parade.
J'Ouvert is a pre-dawn celebration of Caribbean pride, culture and heritage leading up to the parade in Brooklyn, but the event has become linked with violence.
Last year, two people were killed. A 21-year-old man was stabbed at Grand Army Plaza and 43-year-old aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Carey Gabay, died after police said he was caught in the crossfire between rival gangs on Bedford Avenue.
City officials said both events will have unprecedented security.
