Crews Race To Fix Battered Roads As Potholes Claim Tire After Tire
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Potholes have been claiming tire after tire and car after car around the Tri-State area. The situation has gotten so bad that one highway had to be shut down for part of the weekend to undergo repairs.
The Department of Transportation was out removing chunks of road from the battered Belt Parkway on Saturday morning, CBS 2's Dave Carlin reported.
A section of the road between Knapp Street and Flatbush Ave looked like the crater covered surface of the moon.
The emergency roadwork happened just hours too late for Dayanara Nino.
"There was a huge pothole there. The car went in, it blew out right away," she said.
Nino was just one of four pothole victims in the same place at the same time.
"It's one thing if it's one person but there's one, two, three, four people pulled over for the same situation. They have some explaining to do," Vincent Johnson said.
"At a point you don't want to swerve into the next lane so you've gotta hit 'em," Joey Lunger told CBS 2's Don Champion.
The Department of Transportation said it has 65 repair crews out this weekend, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.
In the city 11,000 potholes were filled on Thursday alone, 64,000 have been filled since January 1. In Hudson County crews have been filling more than 100 potholes a day.
DOT officials have called it the worst year for potholes that they can remember.
