Cops: Accounts Compromised After Skimming Device Found On Plainview ATM
PLAINVIEW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Police on Long Island have urged some bank customers to check their accounts after a skimming device was found on an ATM machine.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, the skimmer was discovered by an ATM repairman last month at the TD Bank on Old Country Road in Plainview. Another skimmer was also found at the outside card entrance.
Nassau County Police determined several accounts were compromised as a result.
"We are urging any person who may have used this branch or anything in the vicinity to check their accounts for loss," Nassau County Police Inspector Kenneth Lack told Hall.
The bank deactivated any potentially compromised cards, Newsday reported.
Authorities are looking into whether the suspect who put a skimming device on a ticket machine at the Long Island Rail Road station in Baldwin also put the devices at the TD Bank branch.
In the LIRR case, police believe a Romanian national with ties to an identity theft ring is to blame, Hall reported.
Police urge everyone who uses a debit or ATM card to cover they keypad when punching in their PIN code to protect against ID theft.
"Well certainly when you go to an ATM, if anything looks out of the ordinary, certainly notify the bank personnel or if the bank is closed notify 911," said Lack. "The banks themselves usually check the devices routinely."
