117 Birds Found In One Connecticut House

WESTON, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- More than 100 birds were recently rescued from a Fairfield County, Connecticut home.

As WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported, more than 100 exotic birds – some dead, some barely alive – were found in the home in Weston.

It will take weeks to nurse all the birds back to health, Schneidau reported.

It was officials from the Town of Weston who first arrived at the scene. Three rooms of exotic birds – some dead, some alive – were found in the house, officials said.

Some had been neglected for a long time and were in tough shape.

Rhode Island Parrot Rescue was called in, and manager Corrie Butler said she was overwhelmed from the suffocating stench were the birds, many of them dead, were housed.

"On arrival, the stench was the first thing that hit us," Butler said. "You could smell it from down the street."

Butler said her team rescued 117 birds, all in varying states of health. She said it seemed they had not been fed for a very long time.

Extra volunteers were lending a hand at the Rhode Island Parrot Rescue Center in hopes that the beautiful, intelligent creatures could be nursed back to health.
