College Student Found Beaten To Death In New Brunswick Backyard
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities in New Jersey say they're not sure what led to the fatal beating of a college student from Tennessee.
Middlesex County prosecutors say William McCaw was found dead in the backyard of a New Brunswick home around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
The 22-year-old Gallatin resident was a student at Kean College in north Jersey, about 25 miles away from where he was found. But he had previously attended Rutgers University and would often return to the New Brunswick area to visit friends.
A K-9 unit spent the evening combing through the neighborhood where McCaw was found by an unidentified resident.
McCaw had been visiting friends at Rutgers over the weekend and spent the night hanging out with his fraternaty brothers at Pi Kappa Phi.
Friends said that McCaw was popular and liked by everyone who knew him. His death left the community stunned, CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez reported.
"It's pretty shocking and we know what kind of neighborhood this is so we are pretty cautious around these parts," one neighbor said, "When kids go out and drink that's when stuff gets pretty crazy around here."
Middlesex County prosecutors say McCaw had no connection to the people who lived at the home, and it's not clear where the attack occurred.
McCaw's grieving family gathered at his grandparents' home in Flemington where his father asked for privacy.
McCaw was pronounced dead at the scene. A cause of death has not been disclosed, but prosecutors say he suffered blunt force trauma.
